Alaska June/ July On the Nushagak River 2009

Filed under: OUTDOORSMAN NEWS — wildwildmuseum at 12:25 am on Tuesday, August 25, 2009

Hello out there hope everyone is doing well. Here is my 2009 report on fishing the famed Nushagak
River in the Bristol Bay area of the great state of Alaska. The fishing was great for the first two weeks of the season, but the second two weeks of the season was a different story. The same old story year after year. We start catching a few good fish then bam!! the commercial fisherman take over and decimate the King Salmon run. It seems that they need to take the salmon by the million while we try to take them by the foursomes. In my opinion Alaska Fish & Game needs to set some rules. They need to get 100,000 breedable King Salmon in the river to ensure there continued existance. We did the numbers, if you add up all the fish taken by anglers in all the camps on the river we come up with 10,000 fish total maybe. That is a great year. The state seems to think people are going to pay $3,000.00 to $6000.00 a week to come up there to catch fish that are net burned and deformed, all the while they are killing them by the million out in the bay, and lets not even mention what pressure they are getting out in the open ocean. The Chinese, Russians, Japanese, and native corps giant trollers that literaly sweep the ocean of fish. Someone is dreaming, I have been on the river since 1996 and have watched its decline ever since.
Someone needs to do something before it is too late. My advice is go while there are fish there, because it is not going to last. My time on the Nushagak river is coming to a sad end soon.
serious regards

Team Keslar went to cetral Kansas on November 30.2009 to December 8 2008.
We had an excellent adventure. We took two great 8 point whitetails. We had a great time hunting some pheasant also. The ranch we hunt has been getting a little extra pressure so Dr. Matthews and myself decided to rest the ranch for a year or so. I think we are going to go to a new place for giant whitetails. We are thinking Saskatchewan, and Manitoba for next year. You will be able to see the big bruisers on the site soon. We thank Darren, and doc for everything.

Team Keslar heads to Kansas for the third time in four years. We just cant get enough of Kansas.
What I can tell you is this the ranch we hunt is loaded with deer, turkey, and pheasant. The owner of the ranch is Dr. Fritz Farmer, a first class man. Bruce Matthews and I get along with Doc so well he
makes us feel at home when we arrive and all year long for that matter. It is a time of year we chomp
at the proverbial bit to get there. We leave in two days and it feels two weeks. I will post the results
upon return. happy hunting

2008 CARIBOU/MOOSE/GRIZZLY TEAM KESLAR ALASKAN HUNT

Filed under: OUTDOORSMAN NEWS — wildwildmuseum at 11:01 pm on Sunday, September 21, 2008

Team Keslar took 6 hunters to western Alaska for a combo hunt, we were with Jim Hodge of hodges Outfitting. I have hunted with Jim for many years, we have taken all the big game Alaska has to offer twice. I have been an Alaskan assitant guide for him the last 4 years also. The hunters were Monte MCcfadden,Dennis Marcelli,Armour Mellon,Don and Dave Francois, and myself Jack Keslar. We were after Caribou primarily, but that proved difficult. So we started to see bears, grizzlies, and black bears everywhere. That explained the lack of caribou and moose. So we turned our attention to Grizzlies…We scored 2 big grizzlies, in fact world class grizzlies. Dr. Dennis Marcelli scored a giant 9′ grizzly. Armour Mellon scored a even larger one at 9′2″ squared. Skulls measured at 25.5 inches ,and 27.5 respectivley. Alaska Fish and Game was very happy that we got those two predators out of that ecosystem or territory. It was a tuff hunt for all involved, but was a big adventure any way you look at it. Jim was short handed because of last minute illness to one of his guides so I filled his void. That did not stop us. It was all good, hope to talk to some of you soon…..Jack Keslar

Fishing Camp/Bristol Bay, Alaska, The Nushagak River, 2008

Filed under: OUTDOORSMAN NEWS — wildwildmuseum at 8:01 pm on Wednesday, July 9, 2008

I headed to fishing camp on June 17 2008 returned July 8 2008. We had a great year with the King salmon run. It started out slowly but turned on great. We had 24 fisherman this year and they all filled there tags for king salmon. The average cooler weighed about 60 lbs. The largest fish caught was 30lbs-41 inches long. The Nushagak River has become part of the Museums yearly missions. This year we are adding a white fish to the exhibits for Alaska, caught and donated by Dr. Michael Phelps. Micheal and I only fished one morning together, but had a great time. Mike was accompanied by his son Patrick, and Dr.David Maguire and his son David. Everyone had a great time. I cant wait until next year. If anyone wants to go fishing just contact me and we will set you up……good fishing

Kansas 2007

Filed under: OUTDOORSMAN NEWS — wildwildmuseum at 9:01 pm on Thursday, November 1, 2007

Jack Keslar, and Bruce Matthews are at it again. We are headed to Kansas were the giant whitetail roams, and usually dies of old age. Paradise Land & Cattle Co. Dr Fritz Farmers place. It will be the second year in a row that we have drawn a tag in heaven for whitetailed deer. The last time we were there we scored some giant bucks, Bruce took a 175 b&c with a broken Main beam. Can you amagine 175 with a broken main beam, that means over 200 inches of horns with all his points. That is pretty hard to beat. I promise we will try, and try hard. We get a little bonus, we get to trap some Bobcats while we are there. I can’t wait to get there. November 24-07 can’t get here fast enough………..will report our success later……

Report: trip summary : It was beyond our expectations for sure. Myself and Dr. matthews scored our first reo-grand gobblers, #2 we each took our share of wild ringneck pheasants.Three we each collected two huge whitetails, one 9 pointer that the good Dr. took at the mid 160s, mine was a perfect ten point in the 140s.. Each of the deer weighed in excess of 300lbs. Neddless to say we rebooked for next year before we left. The deer herd has been developed and maintained for over 15 years on this ranch. 4 bow hunters,2 blackpowder hunters, and 4 rifle hunters, get to sit in paradise Land and cattle co.ranches stands. That is it. That is why they have trophy deer in the 200pt class. It is a first class operation, and first class accomodations. First class period, it gets TEAM KESLARS FIVE STAR DESTINATION AWARD………………….JACK TEAM KESLAR
